Art competition - five top tips for success

If you have been perfecting your artistic skills during COVID-19 restrictions we would love to see what you have created. Here are five top tips for entering our calendar art competition.

  1. Is it bright and colourful?

For 2021 we want to create our most vibrant calendar yet. Our judges will be looking for artwork which is bright and colourful.

  1. Does it fit the brief?

This year’s brief is life on your doorstep; how you interpret this is up to you. Think about what you see around you or close to your home. Maybe you have discovered a beautiful nature spot that you hadn’t noticed before. It may be a view from your window, a snap shot of family fun or a still life of objects you love.

  1. Does it work landscape?

Our finished calendar will feature the artworks in a landscape format. This means that an image that is wide and short (landscape) will have a better chance of being selected than something tall and narrow (portrait) in composition.

  1. Is your photograph big enough?

If you are entering photography into the competition you need to make sure the image is big enough to print out clearly at an A4 size. As a guide the file size needs to be at least 2MB. Images taken through apps like Instagram may have been reduced in size and although they look great on a screen they will look blurred once printed.

  1. Does your entry photograph show your artwork at its best?

The judges will only see a photograph of your work so make sure it really shows your work at its best. When you take your photograph:

  • Remove any glass frames.
  • Make sure the art is well lit; you may find that taking the photograph outside will help keep the image closer in colour to the original.
  • If possible use a tripod to help keep your camera or phone still.
  • Take lots of photos, then select the clearest one that best represents your piece.

Once you are ready to send your entry email the photograph along with a few words about your piece, your name and contact details to calendar@wrekin.com

Good Luck!
