Cup awarded for best sustainable garden at Shrewsbury Flower Show

The sustainable garden award at the Shrewsbury Flower Show, sponsored by The Wrekin Housing Trust, has this year been awarded to Carl Gerrard of Shaw Trust Enterprises; a social enterprise based at Walton Hall Academy in Eccleshall.

This year’s theme for the show gardens was “Land of Hope and Glory”, and Alison Fisher, Board member at The Wrekin Housing Trust, was thrilled to award this year’s cup for the best sustainable garden to Carl Gerrard of Shaw Trust Enterprises; a social enterprise based at Walton Hall Academy in Eccleshall.

Alison commented “The garden is a most deserving winner of the best sustainable garden award, now in its fifth year. We’re very aware of the hard work and dedication that goes into producing an award winning show garden, and you can clearly see this here. Visitors to the Show can all take great ideas back to their own gardens from all these glorious show gardens”.

The Wrekin Housing Trust enjoyed participating in the Shrewsbury Flower Show’s Show Gardens’ competition for several years itself, achieving gold medals each year.

Keen to support the Horticultural Society and their excellent Flower Show on an ongoing basis, the Trust for the last five years has sponsored the annual award for the ‘best sustainable garden’.

The criteria the judges look for in the garden are based around having innovative, cost-effective features that can be reused in a normal domestic garden. This fits in very well with the Trust’s whole ethos of sustainability.
