Fundraising a piece of cake for Wrekin residents

Residents at retirement villages across Telford and Wrekin have been digging deep to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The schemes, run by The Wrekin Housing Group, hosted a range of events for residents and members of their local communities.

Wrekin residents raised an impressive £3,053.93 through coffee mornings, a ‘bake-off’ and race nights. This was then matched by The Wrekin Housing Group to make a grand total of £6,107.86.

Katrina Pooler, Events Coordinator for The Wrekin Housing Group said:

“We’re thrilled to have been able to raise so much for Macmillan Cancer Support. Our residents and staff have worked so hard to create fun and inclusive events that bring everyone together. I could not be prouder of everyone for their efforts in baking and raising money for this really important cause.”

At a ‘bake-off’ competition at Morton Court in Dawley, residents and Wrekin staff were invited to whip up their own culinary creations that were then sold off to raise money.

The 2023 ‘bake-off’ champion and Morton Court resident Mick Smith, 60, first started baking to bring everyone at his scheme together.

Mick said:

“I got involved in the bake-off because some of the ladies here suggested it. I entered the competition last year and came second and thought, I’m going to improve on that. I’ve been planning it for ages but it all came together on the day. I’ll make them for other people too if they ask me, birthdays and things like that. I just hope I brought a bit of happiness to someone.”

Kate Thomas, Relationship Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support visited Morton Court to meet everyone and say thank you in person for everyone’s hard work and kindness.

Kate said:

“Thank you to all the residents of Wrekin Housing Group and Wrekin Housing Group itself for raising such a fantastic amount for Macmillan. These vital funds help us help people with cancer such as by providing grants and funding the Macmillan Information Centre at the Princess Royal Hospital.”
