Housing trust to hold Macmillan fundraiser in Newport

The china teapots and vintage cake stands are at the ready for a special afternoon tea-themed event to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Wrekin Housing Trust’s Newport shop will be filled with bunting for the fundraiser, which takes place on Tuesday 25th September from 10am to 2pm. Last year the shop hosted the event for the first time and managed to raise almost £100. However, organiser James Bailey says this year they are going bigger and better and their aim is to double their target this year.

“Last year’s event was organised last minute and yet we still had a good turnout and we were pleased with the amount raised,” said James, who works at the Trust as an Area Manager. “However, this year we are going all out and we have decided to base the event around an afternoon tea theme complete with table cloths, cake stands, china teapots and bunting.”

The event is part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which last year raised £27 million so the charity could support those affected by cancer, including their family and friends.

James added: “The Wrekin Housing Trust has been based in Newport High Street for over 20 years and it is great to hold an event like this which attracts people from across the area. At last year’s event we had tenants drop in to see us, as well as a local councillor and chair of the Newport Chamber of Commerce – it was a good way of bringing people together while raising money for a very worthwhile cause.”
