Money Matters: Are you missing out on support you’re entitled to?
If money has been feeling tighter lately, you’re not alone. Last month brought about a number of bill increases from council tax to water and energy, as well as phone and broadband hikes, many households are doing everything they can to keep on top of things.
But here’s something we see all the time – people struggling with their finances who are actually missing out on support they’re entitled to.
In this week’s Money Matters column, we look at the support that is out there and who can access it.
Our Money and Debt Advice team here at Housing Plus Group speak to customers day-in, day-out who don’t realise what they are entitled to and are missing out on hundreds – and sometimes even – thousands of pounds a year.
One of the simplest ways to check you’re getting everything you’re entitled to is by using a benefits calculator.
Tools like the Turn2us benefits calculator, Policy in Practice better off calculator and entitledto benefits calculator are completely free and easy to use.
They can give you a clearer picture of what support might be available based on your personal circumstances.
All you need is some basic information, such as your income, household details, your rent or other regular outgoings and any benefits you may already receive.
From there, it can show you what you could be entitled to – and it might be more than you realise.
One assumption that many make is that benefits aren’t for them because they’re in work – but that isn’t always the case.
You might be eligible if you:
- Are working but on a low income
- Have children
- Have a disability or health condition
- Are caring for someone
- Have recently had a change in circumstances like a new job or reduced hours
Other changes in your situation such as a relationship change or drop in income can affect what you’re entitled to which is why it’s worth checking regularly.
Benefit calculators can help you understand how these changes might impact your finances and make sure you’re not left short.
If you’re unsure about anything, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Free confidential money advice is available through organisations including Citizens Advice.
Housing Plus Group customers can also talk things through with our Money and Debt Advice team and help you apply for any support if needed.
