Money Matters: Celebrating the lifeline offered by money advisers this Advice Week 2026
In this week’s Money Matters column, Lois Alexander, Money Adviser at Housing Plus Group, shares her insights on the vital role she and her colleagues play in helping people navigate financial challenges and access support when they need it most.
As a Money Adviser, I see how quickly money worries can build up and the difference the right support can make. With Advice Week 2026 taking place next week, I want to highlight why asking for help early can be so crucial.
Led by AdviceUK as part of its Advice Saves campaign, Advice Week highlights the vital role advice services play in helping people through difficult times.
In my role, I speak to tenants who are struggling to make ends meet, worried about mounting bills or unsure how they'll manage an unexpected expense. Everyone's circumstances are different but one thing I often see is how much of a difference it makes when someone has the opportunity to talk through their worries and understand what support is available to them.
Money worries can feel incredibly isolating. You might be trying to decide which bills to pay first or finding that your income simply doesn't stretch far enough to cover the essentials. When you're in that situation, knowing where to start can feel like another challenge altogether.
That's where advice can make a real difference.
When I support a tenant, one of the first things I want to do is understand their circumstances. By looking at their income, outgoings and any debts they may have, I can help them identify potential options and workout practical next steps.
That might mean checking whether they're receiving all the benefits they're entitled to, exploring help with energy costs or looking at ways to manage debts. For someone struggling with arrears, it could mean helping them understand their options and access support before the situation becomes more difficult to resolve.
There is never a one-size-fits-all answer. My role is to help tenants understand the options available to them and find a way forward that reflects their individual circumstances.
For all of us in the team, our job is about much more than numbers on a page. It's about helping people feel more in control of their finances and less alone with their worries.
Advice services can be a lifeline, helping to prevent homelessness and reduce financial hardship. When someone is struggling to keep up with essential payments, early intervention with an adviser can help them access support, face problems head on and protect the security of their tenancy.
Asking for help isn't always easy. People can feel embarrassed to talk about their financial circumstances or worry that they should be able to manage everything themselves, but money difficulties can happen to anyone, and there is absolutely no shame in seeking support.
Advice Week is an important reminder of the value of the work carried out by advisers across our communities. Every conversation is an opportunity to help someone take control of their situation; get the support they need and take a step towards greater financial security.
