Primary school pupils help shape new green space at Wellington development

Pupils from Short Wood Primary School have visited the High Street development in Wellington to help shape the design of a new green space being delivered as part of a Housing Plus Group‑led regeneration project.

Housing Plus Group is transforming the site as part of a £16m partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council, Homes England and The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership. The development will provide 67 much‑needed affordable homes, built with enhanced insulation to cut emissions and help reduce residents’ heating bills. This investment forms part of the Group’s commitment to creating places people are proud to call home.

To ensure the regeneration delivers lasting community benefit, Housing Plus Group is working with construction partner Lovell Partnerships to develop a dedicated greenspace within the scheme. As part of this work, pupils from Short Wood Primary School were invited to contribute ideas on how the area could support biodiversity and local wildlife.

During their visit, pupils explored the site, learned about the progress so far, and began sharing their thoughts on how nature could be supported within the new neighbourhood. To continue their involvement, the school plans to create a ‘mirror garden’ on its grounds so pupils can follow the annual life cycle of the various plants and see how their ideas influenced the final design.

Short Wood Primary School Eco Warrior Leader, Jane Aston said:

“It’s been a fantastic opportunity for our Eco Warriors to visit the new green space by High Street and begin thinking about how it can be developed to support local wildlife and biodiversity. The children have already shared some thoughtful and creative ideas, and we’re really excited to involve more pupils and their families in the coming weeks. Working together with the Housing Plus Group gives our children a real sense that their voices matter and that they can play an active role in shaping their local environment.”

Sam Hine, Social Value & Inclusion Manager at Housing Plus Group, added:

“Housing Plus Group is committed to our regeneration projects bringing long‑lasting benefits to the community. Working with Short Wood Primary School has added a different dimension to this scheme and the pupils’ enthusiasm has been fantastic to see. Their ideas will influence how this greenspace will support biodiversity and create a welcoming environment for residents. Partnerships like this show the wider social value that regeneration can deliver for local communities.”
