Stafford is dementia friendly town for third year

For the third year running Stafford has received recognition from the Alzheimer’s society for working to become a Dementia Friendly community.

Despite a difficult year over thirty community groups which include housing associations, the police, Staffordshire County Council, local councils, libraries, schools, colleges and faith groups have continued to work together to support people with Dementia across the community and give them a voice.

Covid-19 brought challenges, but working practices across the area have evolved and included the introduction of telephone call support lines, help with the delivery of essential supplies, regular welfare checks, food distribution and door step visits.

Dianne Wallace, Dementia Outreach Manager for The Wrekin Housing Group is organisational lead and secretary of Stafford Dementia Action and said.

“We’re delighted that Stafford has once again been recognised as working towards a Dementia Friendly Community. We have demonstrated that our community is a place where people with dementia are respected and understood and where people can live as they would want to, as part of the community.

This year has seen us all work very differently. However, we were still able to show how hard we are working to make Stafford and its surrounding areas a safe and welcoming environment for all. This has highlighted how members of the group have shown resilience, flexibility, and determination of which I am immensely proud.”
