Trophy presented to best sustainable garden winners at Shrewsbury Flower Show

The sustainable garden award at the Shrewsbury Flower Show, sponsored by The Wrekin Housing Trust, has this year been awarded to The Shaw Trust.

This year’s theme for the show gardens at the 131st Flower Show was “Times Gone By”, and celebrity gardener Chris Beardshaw, together with Beverley Ashton, Head of Marketing & Business Research at The Wrekin Housing Trust, were pleased to award the trophy for the best sustainable garden to Carl Gerrard on behalf of The Shaw Trust.

Beverley Ashton commented “The Trust participated in the show gardens here at the Shrewsbury Flower Show for many years, which I was involved in, so we appreciate just how much hard work and dedication goes into producing an award winning show garden. This gold medal winning garden is very special, and most importantly meets our sustainability criteria – so it’s a most deserving winner of the best sustainable garden award which is now in its seventh year. Visitors to the show can all take great ideas back to their own gardens too from all these inspirational show gardens”.

After achieving gold medals for their own show gardens for many years, the Trust, as part of their commitment to communities across Shropshire, were keen to support the Horticultural Society and their excellent Flower Show on an ongoing basis. The Trust has sponsored the annual award for the ‘best sustainable garden’ for the last seven years.

The criteria the judges look for in the sustainable garden are based around having innovative, cost-effective features that can be reused in a normal domestic garden. This fits in very well with the Trust’s whole ethos of sustainability.

The Wrekin Housing Trust and partners are also exhibiting at the show this year on Gloucester Avenue. A series of demonstrations including a cook off, knock out Boccia and furniture restoration will take place throughout the two days. Visitors can also find out about new stylish ShireLiving apartments for rent for the over 55s now available across Shropshire, including in Bicton, Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Telford, and Staffordshire. Do pop by and see them!
