Work starts on new housing site in Cheadle
The Wrekin Housing Trust has purchased unused land and buildings on the site of the former Hurst’s timber yard at Bank Street, Cheadle.
The site will now provide 28 two and three bedroom houses, two bungalows and 12 apartments in a converted building. The Trust will be working with Harpers to construct the homes, which will be let by the Trust once complete. Part of the build will involve the conversion of important local buildings, located within a conservation area in Cheadle, with parts of the buildings dating back to 1800s.
As well as providing a selection of brand new homes for the area, the development will generate over £10.6 million to the economy and will create almost 100 new jobs. The site will provide four construction apprentice opportunities for local people looking to gain experience and skills in this industry.
The development is close to the town centre, allowing new residents easy access to local services and will be a great addition to the area in terms of meeting the need for new affordable housing in the area.
Steve Swann, Development Manager with The Wrekin Housing Trust, said that he was “delighted that the scheme has now commenced on site; the development will provide a mix of house types meeting a variety of local housing needs including a number of one bedroom flats which are in great demand locally.”
