Wrekin pitches in to support local hockey club

It’s been a tough year for sports clubs across the region, but Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club are celebrating a welcome funding boost

The Wrekin Housing Group has donated £4,000 towards the cost of developing their new pitch, which is helping bring through the next generation of talented hockey players.

Telford and Wrekin Hockey Club were successful after applying to the housing group’s Community Fund. The fund was set up to support groups and projects in communities where The Wrekin Housing Group operates. The fund has benefited community groups, churches, schools and charities.

The investment is part of a long-term partnership between the two organisations, which has also seen the Group sponsor the Hockey Club’s women’s side.

Telford and Wrekin Hockey Club Chairman Gwynne Goodfield said:

“The support we’ve received from The Wrekin Housing Group has been instrumental in helping us to raise the funds needed for this new pitch. Without their generous support this facility probably wouldn’t have been possible.

“Since we’ve had the pitch put down, we’ve seen a significant increase in members joining our club. Our junior section has now grown to over 150 players and everyone has taken great pride in our new pitch.

“It allows us to grow the hockey club and open up these excellent facilities for the wider community. We see this facility as being a hub for hockey across Shropshire and we plan to open the facility up to local schools to use during the week.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to The Wrekin Housing Group for their generosity – we look forward to continuing our strong relationship in the future.”

Sam Hine, Social Value and Inclusions Manager with The Wrekin Housing Group said:

“We’re delighted to support Telford and Wrekin Hockey Club and see the great work they’re doing in the community.

“It’s a first-class facility and it’s great to see the hockey club getting the next generation excited about sport.”
