ShireLiving - Extra care

People who live within extra care housing developments have their own self-contained flats with on-site care. The main aim of extra care housing is to encourage and promote independence, enabling people to live in their own homes, but with the support they need to be safe and happy.

Other key principles of extra care are:

• Recognising individuality and promoting a person-centered service
• Maintaining security for people to feel safe in their home and environment
• Ensuring dignity, privacy and confidentiality of our residents
• Promoting inclusion with the local community.

Extra care provides people with individual self-contained accommodation, on-site care and support and housing management services, all of which ensure that residents can be independent in their own homes, rather than needing to go into a residential home. All properties in our extra care housing are fitted out to make life easier, from shower rooms with non-slip flooring to emergency alarms and assistive technology for peace of mind. A range of communal facilities are also provided, such as lounge areas, laundry rooms and secure gardens.

People who apply for an extra care property are assessed individually on their requirements and we cater for a range of needs from mild to severe, with tailored care plans to ensure residents get exactly the care and support they need and to provide as much choice and flexibility as possible.

Parkwood, our flagship extra care scheme in Woodside, contains 54 extra care apartments as well as a restaurant, shop, hairdressers, well-being facility and function rooms. It is just a 10 minute walk from the local community and health centre. For more information, visit the Parkwood website.

We are currently developing further extra care schemes across Staffordshire and Shropshire under our ShireLiving brand, with our first scheme due to open in autumn 2014.
